Welcome to Ascend Mobility and Rehabilitation. As a licensed Occupational Therapist with nearly a decade of direct clinical experience, I've been treating Upper Extremity ailments in a wide variety of settings and understand how they can have a profound impact on the quality of our daily lives.

Shoulder Injuries

Shoulder injuries like Rotator Cuff Tears, Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder), Shoulder Impingement Syndrome, Labral Tears, and Biceps Tendonitis are quite common. Rotator Cuff Tears often result from repetitive overhead activities or trauma. Adhesive Capsulitis causes shoulder stiffness and pain, frequently developing without a clear cause. Shoulder Impingement Syndrome arises from the narrowing of space for tendons, often due to repetitive motions. Labral Tears and Biceps Tendonitis typically occur from overuse or sudden injuries, affecting shoulder stability and function.

Cervical Injuries

Cervical injuries like Cervical Radiculopathy, Cervical Spondylosis, and Whiplash are fairly common. Cervical Radiculopathy often results from nerve compression due to herniated discs or bone spurs, leading to pain or numbness in the neck and arms. Cervical Spondylosis, a degenerative condition, arises from wear and tear on the cervical discs, causing stiffness and discomfort. Whiplash typically occurs from sudden head movements, such as in car accidents, resulting in neck strain and pain.

Elbow Injuries

Elbow injuries such as Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow), Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer's Elbow), Elbow Bursitis, and Cubital Tunnel Syndrome are common in daily activities. Tennis Elbow results from repetitive strain on the outer elbow, often from sports or manual tasks. Golfer's Elbow affects the inner elbow from overuse or poor technique. Elbow Bursitis involves inflammation of the bursa, usually from trauma or prolonged pressure. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome occurs from pressure on the ulnar nerve, often due to repetitive bending or leaning on the elbow.

Wrist Injuries

Wrist injuries such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex (TFCC) Tears, and Scaphoid Fractures are fairly common. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome results from repetitive motions or pressure on the median nerve, often due to frequent typing or gripping. TFCC Tears, caused by sudden twists or chronic overuse, lead to wrist pain and instability. Scaphoid Fractures usually occur from falls onto an outstretched hand, causing pain in the wrist and difficulty with movement.

Thumb & Finger Injuries

Injuries like Skier’s Thumb (UCL) Injury, Basal Joint Arthritis, Trigger Thumb, Gamekeeper’s Thumb, Trigger Finger, and DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis are relatively common. Skier’s Thumb and Gamekeeper’s Thumb result from traumatic impacts or excessive stress on the thumb. Basal Joint Arthritis is often due to wear and tear, causing pain at the base of the thumb. Trigger Thumb and Trigger Finger involve tendon inflammation, affecting gripping and movement. DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis arises from repetitive wrist and thumb movements, causing pain and swelling.

Limited Direct Access for Cash-Based Services

Washington State operates under a "Limited Direct Access" policy for Occupational Therapy services. This allows an Occupational Therapist to conduct an Initial Evaluation without a provider's referral. During this evaluation, the therapist will assess functional limitations that impact the patient's ability to perform activities of daily living, such as job duties, routine tasks, recreational activities, and other meaningful engagements that contribute to quality of life.

To continue treatment beyond the Initial Evaluation, signed approval from a provider is required. The Initial Evaluation is included in all service packages. Ascend Mobility and Rehabilitation will fax the evaluation to the patient's provider after the Initial Evaluation to request approval. However, to expedite this process, it is advisable for new clients to notify their provider that they are seeking Occupational Therapy services.
